The Comprehension Previewing in Reading

Today, I'd like to share my experience from the second meeting of my reading and writing class. During this session, our lecturer Mr. Irwan assigned us the task of reading something from a book or article using a technique called previewing. This method aims to help us in understanding the text's primary concepts before entering into more detail during reading.

sometime when we reading something we feel get boring, but when we read use previewing we know or understand about what we read. when we preview we get an idea of what we will find in the text. Then our brain can begin making connection and our comprehansion will be faster and better. It's a method that involves quickly scanning through the material to get an overall sense of the content, structure, and main points. This approach can be particularly useful for those of us who may have limited time to dedicate to reading due to busy schedules. 

So, what exactly is comprehension previewing?

Previewing is something we already do in our life. For example when we read the newspaper or megazine we often look for the headline or the picture in the cover to get some idea of what the article inside the megazine so we can decide which ones our sense. with previewing for just a few second, we get idea or information about the text we are going to to read. steps to previewing :

1.  preview for only a few minute
2.  read the title of the cover book or text
3.  decide what kind of text it is
4. notice if there are a maps, pictures, charts, names, dates, or numbers in passages
5.  look of the first line sentence in paragraph

In my story, I using my phone to search for an article. As I searched, thoughts of mountains came to my mind, and I stumbled upon an article that described the beauty of Bromo mountain. Why did I choose Bromo? Because I went there in 2018.

It seemed like the perfect opportunity to put the technique of previewing to the test, to read the article about the place I ever visited. Previewing the article allowed me to quickly grasp the main themes and key points, giving me a good sense of what the article was about. This made it easier for me to engage with the material and understand the content more deeply, even with my limited time.

In conclusion, the experience of using comprehension previewing was eye-opening. It not only helped me understand the importance of this technique but also demonstrated its effectiveness in quickly gaining insights from a text. As I started to improve my capabilities in reading and writing, I am excited to implement this useful method into my daily routine.
